Hispanic Heritage Month Employee Spotlight: Meet Gesmy Rivera

If there’s one word to encapsulate Gesmy Rivera, it is tenacious. Born in Puerto Rico and adopted by her grandparents, Gesmy moved to the United States at the age of eight without knowing any English. While she faced significant learning barriers as a first-generation college student, Gesmy has always been driven by a deeply rooted desire to learn, advocate for her family and overcome the challenges of her past.

Gesmy attended Cleveland State University right after high school, but she felt unprepared for the demands of college. Growing up in poverty and witnessing her grandparents’ struggles due to their lack of English skills fueled her determination to pursue education with passion. “Education was always very important to me,” she recalls, “because I wanted to be an advocate for my family and break through the barriers that had held us back.”

Gesmy’s grandparents instilled in her a powerful belief: once acquired, knowledge could never be taken away. Their unwavering support and encouragement nurtured her thirst for learning. Even when faced with the challenge of taking a break from college after her mother’s passing, Gesmy remained determined to succeed.

Gesmy’s journey included working in retail while re-enrolling in school. With support from Cleveland State’s transfer center and a job in the undergraduate office, she gained valuable insights into the behind-the-scenes aspects of the undergrad experience, which propelled her academic career. Even when faced with pregnancy, she remained steadfast in her goal of completing her education. After eight years of perseverance, she graduated with degrees in Spanish and Management and Labor Relations.

Today, Gesmy works at College Now as an Adult Programs & Services assistant, where she reflects on her journey as a full-circle moment. Having received assistance from the organization during her undergraduate years, she now finds fulfillment in helping others navigate their educational paths. Her experiences with food insecurity, Medicaid and even homelessness have deepened her commitment to being a reliable pillar in her community.

At Cleveland State, Gesmy’s involvement went beyond academics; she founded a Hispanic club and delivered the commencement speech for the Unity Graduation Celebration of Student Success. She views her role in education as an opportunity to problem-solve and support others, drawing from her own experiences of feeling unseen and unheard.

As a mother to a five-year-old son, Gesmy strives to be a role model, determined to provide him with opportunities she never had. She emphasizes the importance of education and reads with him regularly, embodying her fundamental belief in the power of knowledge.

Gesmy’s journey is a powerful reminder of the impact of resilience, support and the relentless pursuit of education. She continues to inspire others with her story and dedication, making a difference in the lives of those who face similar challenges.
