Cierra Kelly-Hall’s story emphasizes the power of education coming full-circle—in more ways than one. While she had the drive to attend college, Cierra lacked both the financial resources and the guidance to make it happen. Without having family members who had navigated the process before her, the path to college “felt impossible to navigate”. Her goals became possible when she connected with the College Now —then known as the Cleveland Scholarship Programs —which provided not only the funding, but also the personal support she needed to succeed.

Cierra notes that without the help of College Now, she may not have had the opportunity to attend college at all. As a first-generation college student, she lacked family guidance on college applications, financial aid and the overall college journey.  College Now didn’t just help her navigate higher education —they also taught her the ins and outs of the workforce—an area she had no experience with. Cierra recalls that before starting her journey, she didn’t even know what a salary was or how a career path was built.

Using College Now as a guide through the complex world of applications and financial aid, a major turning point in Cierra’s life came when she was awarded the Jimmy Malone Scholarship. This award was about more than just financial support — it introduced her to Jimmy Malone himself. Before College Now had an official mentoring program, Malone took personal interest in her success, serving as her mentor and championing students from all backgrounds.  Their connection was so strong that they still keep in touch today, a testament to the lasting power of mentorship. Through the exposure provided by College Now, Cierra was able to visit different campuses, ultimately landing on her official college decision: enrolling at Bowling Green State University.

Cierra’s journey eventually brought her back to where it all began. After graduating, Cierra’s she returned to College Now as a scholarships coordinator, using her own experiences to support students facing the same obstacles she once did. Today, Cierra works at her alma mater, Bowling Green State University, and serves on the Alumni Council at College Now. Serving in the roles that helped her to and through college is a full-circle experience for her, as she continues to uphold her truth of the power of a college degree. By staying involved, she helps ensure that students from different backgrounds have the same opportunities that shaped her own path.
